Midtown Indianapolis Inc. Board President Eva Marquez announced that the organization is seeking applicants for the executive director position. “Michael McKillip has informed the board that he is investigating other career opportunities and will be stepping down,” she said.

“We are very grateful to Michael for his service during the past 12 years,” she said, adding, “His unwavering dedication and innovative leadership have had a transformative impact in Midtown and beyond.

“It has been a true honor to serve the Midtown community and this organization and l  look forward to working with the board to identify a leader to  continue building momentum in service to  this amazing community,” McKillip said.

Marquez noted that the transition is an opportunity to build on McKillip’s leadership and write a new chapter in Midtown Indy’s strategic vision for inclusive growth and community development. Marquez and McKillip said they and the Board are dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition, maintaining continuity of operations, and preserving the organization’s mission and values.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR – MIDTOWN INDIANAPOLIS, INC.

Position: Salaried, full-time employee

General Description of Position:

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Executive Director serves as the external liaison of the organization and is responsible for implementing undertakings consistent with Midtown Indy’s mission, as well as overseeing all day-to-day operations. This position requires someone with substantial knowledge of urbanism principles, as well as exemplary organizational management skills, fiscal acumen, a diverse background of demonstrated fund development success, and the ability to manage vision and purpose. The organization needs an opportunistic leader who can be proactive and responsive to the needs of the district. Candidates must have a positive, commitment-based leadership style, with the demonstrated ability to set a clear vision, align priorities, and promote an organizational culture which facilitates success. In addition, the candidate possesses demonstrated presentation skills, excellent communication skills, integrity and trust, strategic agility, political savvy, and business acumen. The Executive Director reports to and collaborates with the Board of Directors.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or 5-10 years of related work experience required. Master’s degree is preferred but not required;
  • 3-5 years’ experience in development-fundraising, grant writing, and sponsorship;
  • Familiarity with sources of community development funding preferred;
  • Board development and volunteer programming;
  • Successful operations experience (3-5 years) in nonprofit organizations, including financial management;
  • Outstanding marketing, presentation, interpersonal, and persuasive communication skills (oral and written);
  • Successful experience working with political processes and skilled in diplomacy;
  • Previous engagement with non-profit organizations, particularly in equitable community and stakeholder engagement preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience in commercial real estate development and management preferred;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and grassroots work of a community development/advocacy association.

 Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct and supervise all fundraising activities with direct responsibility for foundation, and corporate-related fundraising, including the management and growth of the pipeline of corporate, foundation, and individual giving by overseeing the preparation, submission, and follow-through for funding requests.
  • Supervise all aspects of the organization’s operations, including supervising/hiring of staff and volunteers, planning and managing all Board meetings, proposing an annual budget; reviewing and analyzing monthly financial reports; ensuring proper allocations of revenue and expenses; identifying variances and recommending action as needed.
  • Serve as the Board of Directors’ primary contact and serve as key staff to board fundraising and governance activities.
  • Direct planning, start-up, and implementation of new initiatives, including providing thoughtful, fact-based, fiscally sound recommendations and counsel to the Board regarding the proper strategy, and priorities for fulfilling Midtown Indy’s mission.
  • Serve as primary spokesperson for the communication of the organization’s services, goals and accomplishments to media, other related organizations, government departments and officials, funders, and prospective clients.
  • Make educational presentations to targeted sectors of the Indianapolis development industry.
  • Promote the organization’s work within Indianapolis and the broader metropolitan area. Serve on any Boards or Committees that work to advance the organization’s mission.
  • Undertake any other work deemed necessary to accomplish the organization’s mission.

Performance Objectives:

Within the first 12 months, the Executive Director will be expected to complete the following:

  • Align with the strategic plan and execute priority initiatives based on available resources. Among other tasks, this includes developing a comprehensive strategy to both attract and retain committed volunteers, harnessing their skills and passion to fortify Midtown Indy’s mission.
  • Develop an organizational and financially sustainable model to support Midtown Indy’s future. Based on the current strategic plan, assess internal infrastructure to ensure proper resources and funding are in place to meet organizational goals and objectives. Annual fundraising goal for operations is $300,000.
  • Identify opportunities for future strategic growth. Utilizing your expertise and entrepreneurial skill set, identify key opportunities where Midtown Indy can have an impact while furthering its mission.
  • Foster stronger connections with stakeholders, community members, and local businesses to deepen Midtown Indy’s impact and support.
  • Identify and establish strategic partnerships with other local organizations and institutions to amplify Midtown Indy’s reach and influence.
  • Build the organization’s presence and profile within Central Indiana by developing promotional resources including web-based media, resource materials, partnerships, and speaking engagements throughout Central Indiana.
  • Administer policies and procedures. Review, create, and implement organizational guidelines as needed.

Compensation: $85,000 with a matching contribution to a SIMPLE IRA.
